RV Flooring 2026: Why Lightweight Waterproof SPC Flooring Is Taking Over Motorhome & Camper Renovation Projects
RV manufacturers and camper converters are switching to lightweight SPC flooring. This article breaks down real-world installation headaches, guidelines for expansion gap allowance, and the key specs needed to stand up to road vibration.
Talk to RV and camper conversion specialists in Europe and North America this year, and you’ll notice a clear shift. They’ve grown tired of traditional plywood, flexible vinyl sheet flooring and heavy laminate flooring — these materials break down fast under RV operating conditions.

Camper vans are nothing like stationary homes. The chassis twists and flexes on the move, with constant jolts over rough roads. They bake under intense summer sun and sit through freezing winter storage. Standard residential flooring often cracks, delaminates or bubbles within a year when installed in a vehicle.
That’s why lightweight click-lock SPC flooring has become the top upgrade pick for new motorhomes and used camper van conversions in 2026.

We’ve partnered with dozens of RV workshops in the past few years, and the same installation mistakes keep cropping up. Many fitters simply pick cheap residential SPC without assessing the working conditions. It’s too thick, heavy and far too rigid. After a few long highway runs, planks start creaking, popping at the locks, or cracking entirely. Proper RV-rated SPC has to strike a fine balance: hard enough for everyday abrasion, yet flexible enough to handle flex, lightweight, and fully waterproof.
Payload is a critical factor many new converters overlook. Extra weight adds up quickly. Overloading an RV creates serious safety risks, and in some regions, it may invalidate your insurance. Our RV SPC features a slim, stable mineral core to cut down weight, paired with a durable wear layer, stain-resistant UV finish and low-VOC composition. This matters a lot inside that compact, enclosed living area where people cook, dine and sleep.

Waterproof performance is a must for camper builds. Drinks get spilled near the kitchen sink, rain can leak around window edges, and muddy boots or slushy snow get tracked inside. Any wood-based flooring swells right away. Even certain LVT will curl up if water sits trapped in the joints for hours. SPC planks are fully waterproof through and through. They won’t swell, rot or warp, making them ideal for kitchen areas, entryways and wet bathrooms.
DIY installers often mess up expansion gaps. An RV chassis flexes and shifts far more than a regular fixed building. We always remind customers not to follow residential flooring guidelines. Leave bigger gaps next to walls, cabinet bottoms and wheel wells. For most camper conversions, we generally don’t recommend full glue-down installation. Loose-lay click-fit flooring copes much better with the vehicle’s movement. Most flooring failures we see stem from bad installation decisions, not defective flooring material.

RV interior tastes are changing as well. Plain cool grey flooring, which was everywhere in camper conversions for years, isn’t as popular anymore. More designers and buyers prefer warm oak, soft walnut and subtle matte neutral tones. They want the space to feel welcoming, not stark and sterile. We supply custom decor patterns, matte surfaces and cut‑to‑size planks made to fit tight slide‑out spaces — a big plus for smaller RV makers.
Sustainability is another frequent request from our European customers. They look closely at recycled content, indoor air quality certificates and whether the material can be recycled. Our RV SPC uses responsibly sourced recycled mineral filler and low‑emission raw materials. It also meets GREENGUARD and FloorScore requirements. This lets RV brands reach their green targets, without giving up the rugged performance needed for travel.

SPC isn’t going to take over every flooring choice for RVs. A lot of builders still go with softer LVT because it feels quieter and warmer underfoot. Still, for converters focused on long service life, solid waterproof performance and keeping weight down, RV-grade SPC is tough to top.
